Akagera National Park offers classic Big Five safaris, boat cruises on Lake Ihema, and scenic savannah landscapes in eastern Rwanda.

Akagera National Park is a protected area in eastern Rwanda, near the Tanzanian border, known as Rwanda's only savannah reserve. Managed in partnership with the African Parks network, it is home to the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceros) and a vast array of other wildlife and bird species. The park offers a variety of activities for visitors:
  • Game Drives: Explore the diverse landscapes of grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands in search of the Big Five, as well as zebras, giraffes, and various antelopes. Guides can be hired to increase your chances of spotting elusive animals.
  • Boat Safaris: Take a scheduled or private boat trip on Lake Ihema to see hippos, crocodiles, and a rich diversity of birdlife, including the rare shoebill stork.
  • Night Drives: Experience the park after dark to spot nocturnal species like leopards, hyenas, and bush babies.
  • Other Activities: Engage in sport fishing on the lakes, go bird watching, or participate in cultural community tours.
Visitor Information
  • Location: North-eastern Rwanda, about a 2-3 hour drive from the capital, Kigali.
  • Hours: Open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM.
  • Entry Fees (International Visitors): $55 USD per adult (13+ years) for a day visit.
  • Activity Costs (International Visitors): Scheduled boat trips cost around $35-$45 USD per person, while guided game drives or night drives are approximately $40 USD per person.
  • Getting There: Road is the primary means of transport; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.
