Gishwati–Mukura National Park protects pristine montane forest and offers nature walks, primate tracking, and eco-tourism experiences.

Gishwati–Mukura National Park is Rwanda's newest national park, a biodiverse montane rainforest located in the Albertine Rift in the country's Western Province. It is composed of two separate forest areas, Gishwati and Mukura, and is primarily known for primate tracking, birdwatching, and guided nature hikes. Key Attractions and Activities The park is a global biodiversity hotspot and offers a variety of activities, though most tourist facilities are currently focused in the Gishwati sector.

Primate Tracking: The main attraction, offering the chance to track chimpanzees, as well as golden, L'Hoest's, blue, and colobus monkeys.
Birdwatching: A haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 230 bird species identified in Gishwati and 163 in Mukura, including several Albertine Rift endemics.
Guided Nature Hikes: Explore the regenerating rainforest on established trails, discovering over 60 species of trees, including indigenous hardwoods and bamboo, and the scenic Kazeneza waterfall.
Cultural Experiences: Engage with local communities through community-based tourism projects, such as visits to local cooperatives, traditional dance performances, and learning about traditional medicine and beekeeping.

Location and Accessibility The park is located on the ridge that divides the Congo and Nile water catchment areas in Western Rwanda, between Lake Kivu and Volcanoes National Park.

By Road: The Gishwati sector is about a 4-hour drive (around 170km) from Kigali on a good surfaced road, though the last kilometer may require a 4x4 vehicle. It's easily accessible and can be visited as part of a larger tour of the region, often combined with trips to Volcanoes or Nyungwe National Parks.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to September, when hiking trails are less slippery and conditions are better for outdoor activities, though the park can be visited year-round. Fees and Accommodation Park fees are often included as part of an all-inclusive stay at lodges within or near the park, such as the Forest of Hope Guest House or Gishwati Lodge. It is advisable to book through a tour operator, who can coordinate all logistics and provide current pricing based on your chosen activities and duration.
