Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi , located in southwestern Uganda near the border with Rwanda, is often celebrated as the most beautiful lake in the country. Its name translates to "place of many little birds", referencing the more than 200 bird species that inhabit the area. Key Highlights
  • Geography: Known as the second deepest lake in Africa, reaching depths up to 900 meters, though some scientific estimates suggest a shallower 40 meters.
  • Islands: The lake is dotted with 29 islands, each with its own history. The most famous is Punishment Island (Akampene), where unmarried pregnant girls were historically left as a deterrent.
  • Safety: Unlike many other African lakes, Bunyonyi is free from bilharzia, crocodiles, and hippos, making it a rare safe haven for swimming.
  • Activities: Visitors can engage in canoeing in traditional dugout canoes, ziplining across the water, bird watching, and hiking through the surrounding terraced hills.
