Namib Desert

The Namib Desert, whose name means "vast place" in the Khoekhoegowab language, is a coastal desert in Southern Africa and is widely considered the oldest desert in the world, having remained arid for at least 55 million years.
  • Geography: It stretches for over 2,000 km (1,200 miles) along the Atlantic coast, spanning through Namibia, southern Angola, and into South Africa.
  • Climate: One of the driest places on Earth, it relies on coastal fog as its primary source of moisture for life. Temperatures can soar to 60°C (140°F) during the day and drop below freezing at night.
  • Dunes: It contains some of the world's tallest sand dunes, some reaching over 300 meters (984 feet).
Iconic Destinations
  • Sossusvlei & Deadvlei: Known for their towering red dunes and "Dead Vlei," a white clay pan featuring 900-year-old dead camel thorn trees.
  • Namib Sand Sea: A UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring massive, shifting dune fields that meet the ocean.
  • Skeleton Coast: A treacherous coastline named for the many whale bones and shipwrecks scattered along its foggy shores.
  • Kolmanskop: A famous ghost town once built for diamond mining, now being reclaimed by desert sands.
  • Despite its harshness, the desert is home to specialized species such as:
  • Oryx (Gemsbok): Highly adapted antelopes that can survive without drinking water for long periods.
  • Fog-Basking Beetles: Insects that stand on their heads to collect moisture from coastal fog.
  • Desert-Adapted Elephants and Lions: Found primarily in the northern regions like Damaraland.
