Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects Africa’s legendary “Mountains of the Moon.” It is famous for high-altitude trekking, glaciers, waterfalls, and Afro-alpine vegetation.

• Mountain Climbing & Trekking: The park is a world-class destination for mountaineering. The most popular multi-day routes are the Central Circuit Trail (6-8 days) and the Kilembe Trail (7-10 days), both leading towards the highest peaks. Reaching the highest point, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley (5,109m), requires technical climbing skills and is best suited for experienced mountaineers.
• Nature Walks & Day Hikes: Shorter, non-technical guided nature walks are available for those not seeking the full summit challenge. Popular options include the trail to Lake Mahoma or walks around the Ruboni and Turaco View areas, offering stunning views and chances to see primates and birds.
• Birdwatching & Wildlife Viewing: The park is an Important Bird Area with over 217 species recorded, including the endemic Rwenzori Turaco, long-eared owl, and bearded vultures. Other wildlife includes chimpanzees, blue monkeys, forest elephants, and the rare three-horned chameleon.
• Cultural Encounters: Visitors can engage with the local Bakonzo community in nearby villages like Ruboni to learn about their traditions, witness cultural performances, visit traditional healers and blacksmiths, and experience local cuisine.

• Location: The park is located in the Kasese District of southwestern Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The nearest city is Kasese.
• Getting There: The gateway town is Kasese, accessible by road from Kampala (about a 6-7 hour drive) or by pre-arranged charter flights to the Kasese airstrip from Entebbe International Airport.
• Best Time to Visit: The drier months of June to August and December to February offer the most favorable weather conditions for hiking and climbing, as the trails are less muddy.
• Accommodation: Options range from budget to luxury lodges and campsites both within and outside the park, including Equator Snow Lodge, Hotel Margherita, and Ruboni Community Camp.
