Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park | Uganda Rainforest & Hot Springs

Semuliki National Park protects a unique lowland rainforest with hot springs, primates, and exceptional birdlife in western Uganda.

Semuliki National Park protects a rare lowland tropical rainforest in western Uganda. It is known for birdlife, hot springs, primates, and Central African wildlife species not found elsewhere in East Africa.

Main Attractions & Activities Sempaya Hot Springs These are the park's most famous attraction, consisting of two main springs: the male (Bitende) and female (Nyansimbi). The water temperature in the female hot spring reaches approximately 95 degrees Celsius, hot enough to boil eggs and bananas in less than ten minutes, which is a popular tourist activity. The springs demonstrate the powerful subterranean forces shaping the Rift Valley. Birdwatching Known as a "birders' haven," Semuliki boasts over 441 recorded bird species, representing about 40 percent of Uganda's total avian varieties. It is home to numerous species associated with the Congo-Guinea region, which are rare elsewhere in East Africa, including the Nkulengu Rail and Long-tailed Hawk. Nature Walks and Hiking Guided nature walks through the diverse forest and walking trails provide opportunities to see a variety of primates, birds, and unique vegetation.
  • Sempaya Nature Trails: These trails, including a route to the hot springs, offer a chance to spot monkeys and learn about the forest ecosystem.
  • Red Monkey Trail: This 11-kilometer trail runs along the eastern edge to the Semuliki River.
Wildlife Viewing The park and adjacent Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve are home to over 53 mammal species, including forest elephants, buffalos, water chevrotains, and various primates like baboons and chimpanzees. Nocturnal species such as leopards and civets can be spotted during night game drives. Cultural Encounters The area surrounding the park is home to four distinct ethnic groups, including the Batwa (Twa) pygmy community, traditionally hunter-gatherers who offer cultural experiences for visitors.
