Skeleton Coast National Park

Skeleton Coast National Park | Namibia Remote Safari

Skeleton Coast National Park is a raw, remote coastline of shipwrecks, desert-adapted wildlife, and dramatic Atlantic scenery.

Skeleton Coast National Park in northwest Namibia is a vast, remote wilderness known for its dramatic landscape where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, littered with shipwrecks and whale skeletons. The park is divided into northern and southern sections, each with unique access and features.

Key Attractions & Activities
  • Shipwrecks & Marine Remains: The coast is famous for its numerous shipwrecks, a result of the treacherous currents, dense fog, and shifting sandbanks. Notable wrecks include the Eduard Bohlen and Dunedin Star. Bleached whale and seal bones also litter the shore, lending the park its name.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Despite the harsh conditions, the park is home to unique desert-adapted wildlife.
    • Desert-adapted species: Look for desert-adapted elephants, lions, brown hyenas, giraffes, oryx, and springbok, particularly near ephemeral riverbeds and waterholes.
    • Marine life: The coast supports huge colonies of Cape fur seals, most famously at the accessible Cape Cross Seal Reserve (south of the park boundary). Heaviside's dolphins and green turtles can also be found offshore.
    • Birdwatching: Over 300 bird species have been recorded, including the Damara tern and flamingos.
    • Landscape Exploration: The scenery ranges from windswept sand dunes and gravel plains to rugged canyons with richly colored volcanic rock.
      • 4x4 Drives: The southern section (south of the Ugab River Gate) is accessible by 4x4 vehicle and allows exploration of canyons, clay castles, and salt pans.
      • Fly-in Safaris: The remote northern section is largely inaccessible by vehicle and can only be reached via exclusive fly-in safaris, offering unparalleled views of the wilderness and opportunities to visit Himba communities.
      • Hiking: The challenging, multi-day Ugab River Trail is available for experienced hikers (usually in the winter season).
      • Angling: The coast, particularly around Henties Bay, is a popular destination for fishing.
Access and Accommodations The park has strict access rules to protect its fragile environment.
    • Access:
      • Southern Section: Accessible by road through the Ugabmund Gate and Springbok Gate. Day visitors are allowed, but overnight stays require prior booking. A permit must be obtained before entry.
      • Northern Section: Off-limits to public vehicles; access is restricted to authorized fly-in tour operators.
